Intro to Seitan Class

This class has been long anticipated by many and I’m very glad to finally be able to offer it to the public! Seitan is one of those odd dishes that represents a rite of passage for those on  a vegan diet. Once you’ve got comfortable with tofu and tempeh, it is likely that your next culinary adventure will involve the mysterious SEITAN.

What is seitan? Seitan is the product of combining Vital Wheat Gluten (a glutinous flour) with water and seasonings and cooking it to produce a savoury, chewy, protein packed food item. Seitan has a pleasant and satiating “meaty” texture. Hence it’s nickname: Wheat Meat.

Seitan can be made to resemble steaks, deli meats, turkey, chicken wings, you name it! It’s a versatile meat mimicking product and it can all be made with just 3 ingredients if you wish. It’s easy to prepare (once you know some basic fundamentals) and can quickly become a weekly staple in your routine.

In this class you will learn the fundamentals of making seitan and be able to taste different seitan-based dishes so that you leave feeling confident and excited to implement these tasty and versatile recipes in your own home!

In this class you can expect to:

-Learn 3 distinct methods of preparing seitan

-Learn about the fundamental ingredients that are common in most seitan recipes and where to get them

-Learn about the nutritional components of seitan, why it’s valuable and how to relate to it in your meals

-Get to sample 3 dishes containing seitan prepared from the different methods taught in class

-Get all the recipes to take home with you

Enter through the west doors (doors closest to Riflerange Rd). As soon as you pass through the double doors you’ll see a staircase slightly to the right. Take those stairs up to the second floor and you will arrive at the community room.

Parking: There is ample parking in the Fortino’s parking lot.

Saturday March 9th @ 6pm (Please arrive 5-10 minutes early so we can start on time)

What you need to bring:
-A pen/pencil

-A willingness to eat and learn!

  • Vegan Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with Queso Cheese sauce and Pickled Jalapenos
  • Marinaded Seitan Steak salad with Sautéd Mushrooms Miso Teriyaki Dressing
  • Seitan Buffalo Wings with Creamy Ranch Dip
